The London branch of Margate pizza restaurant GB Pizza makes gluten-free pizza bases – and they’re a damn lot better than the usual carboard catastrophes. The Telegraph’s Zoe Williams called them “outrageously edible”. Hurrah! Made off-site by gluten-free chef Annie, they handle cross-contamination with care, but do warn that they are a “wheaty” environment. Toppings feature top-notch ingredients in simple combinations: charcuterie from Brixton’s Cannon & Cannon, British mozzarella and Kentish vegetables. Gail’s Artisan Bakery sells award-winning bread, breakfast, cakes and pastries – but it’s not all about the wheat at Gail’s, the bakery also serves some exceptional gluten-free salads, ideal for lunch on the go. We tried the kiln-roasted trout with celeriac and fennel remoulade (£5.50), which is completely wheat and gluten free, however does contain fish, egg, milk and mustard. The salad tasted fantastic, a far cry from your normal takeaway salads, and was topped with a very generous portion of trout – delicious! Gail’s Bakery also does an exceptional flour free chocolate cake, perfect if you’re after something sweet to end your meal with. You can eat in at Gail’s Bakery, or you can buy items to take away – they also do great teas and coffees. Street food stall Meathead serves up stews, cuts and burgers at Exmouth Market, Clerkenwell during the week, but they also do a damn fine veggie stew – perfect for those healthier gluten free days! We tried the vegetable stew served with rice and heaps of fresh salad, the huge portion is priced at £4.50. And here it is, in all its colourful beauty! The stew contains fresh tomatoes, butternut squash, courgette and lots more – we’re guessing these change according to the season. If you’re after something speedy and you’re in the area, Meathead is a great choice for gluten free food on the go, give ‘em a try, we say!
The Breakfast Club is a sort of hangover-busting brunch wonderland with decor that might well have been designed as part of a middle class child’s ‘creativity session’, yet still manages to look totally brilliant.
Mediterranean restaurant Hummus Bros reckons it was the first to think up the entirely brilliant idea of serving main courses on a beautiful bed of hummus. And it may well be – anyone who knows different speak now or *insert hummus-themed threat here*…
